Oxtail Star

Oxtail might sound a bit strange but it has been a popular meal in many places in Europe for many years, with the ‘clear oxtail soup’ being a known winner. This recipe is a stunner for a dinner party and the great thing is that you can prepare it beforehand. It takes time, but it is not much work.


1- 1.5kg oxtail pieces
Flour to coat
2 onions, quartered
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 star anise flower, broken into pieces
½ cup hot water
½ cup red wine
2 tabs sweet chilli sauce
1 tabs soy sauce
1 tsp freshly grated ginger
1 tabs olive oil

Serves 4


Coat inside of slow cooker with oil & preheat on high. Coat oxtail pieces in flour and place oxtail pieces & onions under a hot grill until browned on all sides. (onions won’t need as long). Place oxtail & onions in slow cooker or heavy based pot and sprinkle with garlic & star anise. Combine remaining ingredients & pour over meat.

Have a glass of wine and relax.

Cook on low all day or high for approximately 5 hours.

Serve with mashed potatoes & your favourite vegetables.
